Firstly, a Big Congratulations to you both on your Upcoming Wedding! 😉
It’s such an exciting time, Wedding Planning, but we all know that it can also be quite a stressful time if you allow it to get on top of you, so one of the first tips to remember is take the time to plan everything, well in advance and then you can take it at your own pace and actually have the time to enjoy it!
There are so many elements involved in planning your perfect big day but one important thing to realise is that It is “Your” Big Day and it should ultimately be what you both want. Whether it’s the big White Extravaganza that you’ve always dreamed or your own unique tailor-made intimate celebration…..it doesn’t have to cost a fortune and it doesn’t have to be what everyone expects, as long as it makes you happy.
One of the most Important features to get right on your Wedding Day, is your Cake! It is usually the main Centrepiece of the Room…..after the Bride of Course! With so many Styles, Colours, Themes and Flavours it can seem a daunting task for any Bride or indeed Groom but it really isn’t a hard as you might think. I have put together a few Key Points that I hope can make that element of planning that little bit easier for you……so relax and have a quick read through these and hopefully this can help you make a more informed decision in picking that Ideal Cake for You!
- Things to keep in Mind!
Firstly, when choosing your Cake, remember to keep in mind these few key points before meeting with your chosen Cake Designer. They will need to know the Season/Colour Scheme and of course Time you are getting married in as this can be a very important factor when choosing a Cake. For example: If you are getting married in Summer, Chocolate covered Cakes or indeed Buttercream or Meringue Covered Cakes will not hold up as well in the heat as perhaps a Fondant Iced Cake. Also, the Season can work well when choosing an overall theme for Cake, Flowers etc….such as An Autumn Colour Scheme could mean you could choose some beautiful Autumn Shades of Sugar Leaves and Flowers to compliment your Theme. Plus if you are representing your Theme throughout your features, the Cake Decor can be matched with your Dress Detailing or indeed your Bridesmaid Colours! The time of your Wedding is also very Important depending on the type of Cake you choose as the Best Set Up Time will need to be chosen well in advance so that your Cake looks Fantastic when you and your Guests arrive at the Venue!
Realising your Cake Budget is really Important! It’s always good to be realistic in your expectations for your Cake Design in accordance to your Budget. Always make sure you and your Cake Designer are on the same page when it comes to this, as little details such as Handmade Flowers, Delivery and Assembly Costs etc can bump up the cost on a Cake so make sure everything is agreed on beforehand and that you fully understand exactly how much your Cake will cost! Make sure to shop around as some Cake Designers offer a Custom Made to Budget Option on Cakes! Check Out our Budget Buster Tips at the end of this article for some more Savings Ideas!
- The Taste of Success……Don’t Go It Alone!
Although I’m sure we all agree that Wedding Cakes have to be Beautiful, I really feel that Taste should be the most important part of your Cake. No one wants a Beautiful Cake, that lets them down when it comes to Flavour! When arriving for Taste Testing on your Wedding Cake Samples or Indeed collecting your chosen Flavours, be sure to have a couple of close friends or family with you when tasting, for a second opinion- not too many people as this will lead to too many opinions and a confused Bride/Groom but a certain few people that you can trust to give you their honest opinions when choosing your Flavours. There are so many different Flavours available to choose from which is fantastic, and that’s great when tiered cakes can give you more room for Flavour Choice ……just don’t forget to include at least one tier of your own Favourite! Also, it’s always good to keep in mind if there are Guests with certain Allergies that need to be considered!
- Good Timing is Key!
Make sure you plan your Wedding Cake well in advance, especially if you have a Custom Design in mind or an Elaborate Cake Idea that you would love to have created for you. Remember, Wedding Cakes are not just a Cake, they are a work of Art, based on your own Ideas for your Wedding. They reflect your Theme, your Style, your Dreams and represent exactly what you want for your Special Day! Great Art takes Time and Skill, so just be sure to arrange your Cake and all its’ details as early in your Planning as you can! That way you and your Cake Designer have enough time to make sure you get it right and create your Dream Cake!
- To Cake or not to Cake……
When it comes to making the decision on what type of Cake to have, the possibilities are endless! From Traditional Fruit to Belgian Chocolate Biscuit-Lemon Italian Meringue Buttercream to Rich Chocolate Fudge, Red Velvet to Salted Caramel…….Every Bride/Groom are Different and it’s entirely up to you and what you love!
Whether you choose a Traditional Tiered Cake Style or put your own Unique Style on it by choosing a Tiered Cupcake Tower in your Colour Scheme, Mini Individual Cakes for each Guest or maybe even, instead of Cake, Some Giant Cupcakes or A Selection of Your Favourite Desserts in Miniature Form…..keep in mind, it’s all about what you want to choose as your Wedding Centrepiece (After the Bride of course..) and also, not forgetting….your Budget!
- Guess the Guests!
Don’t forget that the size of your Cake should reflect your Guests and how many of them you plan to have. Not Everyone will eat Cake but it’s always good to be prepared! Don’t forget to keep in mind, do you have a Separate Sweet Cart/Dessert Table and if so would a smaller Cake be an option? Just a few things to consider when making your decisions for your Wedding Cake! Once you’ve decided on your Dream Venue, be sure to consider the following when choosing not just your Cake, but who makes it and the Services they provide! Choose your Design based on your Venue and what is possible for Cake Transportation! Imagine you choose an elaborate design that has to be pre-constructed and then transported…….not the best Idea if your venue has a Mountain Range and a Bumpy Country Road standing between it and the Cake! Where will your Cake be? Carrying a 5 Tier Cake up ten flights of stairs can be tricky…..even for Cake Superhero’s! Does your Cake Designer offer an On Site Assembly and how much does this cost? Have you considered any Delivery Charges involved? Is your Venue covered in your Cake Designers Delivery Area?
- Decisions, Decisions!
Sometimes the hardest part about picking your Cake is actually making the decisions! With so much to choose from and so many people giving you advice, it can end up being put off more and more as it seems such a huge task! It shouldn’t be! Don’t over-complicate it, pick your favourite Flavours and Style keeping in mind, at the end of the day….. that it is your Day and it should be a celebration of what you love! Go with your Gut……It never steers you wrong!
- Time is Money!
When meeting with your Designer, remember, they won’t always have time to sit for hours with you personally when you make and change your choices over and over again. Bear in mind that you need to be 100% sure of your decision before you place the final order for your Cake as if you change your mind, some Cake Designers have an extra charge for changes and of course it could also affect the Cake Cost.
- Don’t Worry…….Be Happy!
Your Wedding Day will be one of the most Important and Happy Days of your Life and as busy as you will be, please try to remember to enjoy it! With proper planning and the help of a Great Wedding Planner, you can ensure that at least a couple of days before your Wedding, you can Switch Off from your Organising Duties and enjoy just being a Bride..or Groom! I know so many Brides that felt that if they could do it again, they would stop putting so much pressure on themselves and remember to enjoy it……so try to make sure you get help when you need help and don’t stress……just makes it harder for the Make Up Artist on the DAY….. 🙂
Budget Busting Tips!
Weddings are Expensive…….but that doesn’t mean you can’t make savings here and there! Here’s some Ideas to get you started:
- Check with your Venue will they allow your Cake be served as After-Dinner Dessert……this can lower your costs slightly.
- Handmade Sugar Flowers and Detailing is extremely Beautiful but can also be expensive depending on your design. Why not consider asking your Florist and Cake Designer to work together in co-ordinating your theme? Fresh Seasonal Flowers and Fruits can also be stunning on a Cake and can be less expensive, depending of course on your chosen Cake design.
- If you don’t have a large Number of Guests but would like a Tall Wedding Cake, why not add in some artificial Tiers in between your Cakes for height. They do cost however are much less than an actual Cake Tier…..just remember not to cut into them!
- If you want to keep your Wedding Cake Costs down, why not order a Smaller Cake as a centrepiece and have some Flat Cakes of your chosen flavours behind the scenes that can be cut up and served once your Photos are done! No one will know the difference!
- Cupcake Tower Wedding Cakes or Mini Dessert Selections are a Fantastic way to cut down on costs and Cutting Charges which some Venues actually charge for. You can order your required number of Cupcakes in your chosen flavours and theme, they are a Fantastic Focal Point for your Room and once you are ready…….Guests can help themselves! They could also double as Favours, all you need is some Pretty Packaging!
Hopefully this Guide will help you in some way towards choosing your Dream Wedding Cake! Don’t forget to bring all your pictures and discuss all your Ideas for your Cake when meeting with Cake Designers!
Enjoy your Wedding Day!
