One of the most stressful periods of our lives will be the process of planning a wedding. For many couples the planning process starts between 18 months-1year before the big day so theres plenty of days and nights to experience the immense stress that comes with planning your dream day.
The stress usually originates from a few key elements ; the budget, the guest list, the process of choosing suppliers, the juggling act in some cases keeping family members happy, the worry of something going wrong, the list is endless and many brides and grooms end up in a state of dread because of all the pressure. Heres some tips that might help you make the experience less stressful !
KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Having a clear idea of your budget will keep things calm as even though we will ALWAYS want to spend more, knowing our limits is a great help in keeping stress levels down.
CONTACT WITH YOUR CREW
Make sure the people you choose as part of your wedding party are right for you ! Theres nothing worse than having a Bridesmaid who has no interest in your big day or a Bestman that nods off at the very mention of weddings so choose wisely ! You need people around you that will rise you up rather than bring you down
Exercise is fantastic to decrease your stress levels as it gives your endorphins a push which in turn makes you feel pretty darn good ! You wil also feel like you are taking care of yourself so that will make you feel better too ! Most of us want to tone up for the good day so a walk in the evening or a gym session will do wonders to take some of those stresses away.
You are going to have so many things to deal with in the lead up to your big day that its absolutely essential to relax when you can to avoid getting stressed out. Turn your phone on silent, put music you love on , take a nice relaxing bubble bath, light a candle, read a good book, whatever makes you feel calm and gives you that bit of much needed ME TIME ! Scents like lavendar, jasmin & Chamomile are great to help you relax too so a few scented candles or essential oils are on the shopping list
MAKE TIME TO MEDITATE
Whether it’s a session of yoga a week, or simply sitting in a quiet place breathing in and out slowly and calmly or even keeping a little thoughts journal about how you are feeling and coping with it all, anything that makes you slow down and take stock is GOOD! Some people find visualising waves as a calming tool while others swear by daily mantras. The bottom line is find the time to relax and use the medium that suits you best !
BEAT IT BRIDEZILLA
Basically….. don’t be a bitch !! Yes it’s a stressful time but the more controlling you are , the harder its going to be to keep your stress levels down. If you are trying to control every little detail and people aren’t stepping up to their roles then there’s a good chance of Bridezille-esque outbursts and lets face it, they won’t do any good. Delegate, delegate, delegate ! This is why point 2 is so important (the right crew having your back ). Trust your bridal party with the jobs you give them, ask your family to be involved, just don’t be a control freak as it wont help your stress levels ( and will probaly make your bridal party and your other half want to run far far away )
SAY YES TO THE RIGHT SIZE DRESS
Yes, us Irish are eternal optimists, sure we know it will be grand on the day right ??? But don’t use this thinking when it comes to your dress. Don’t buy a size too small because “I’m planning to loose a few pounds” and then be in an absolute panic when the dress doesn’t fit ! Air on the side of caution. Buy what’s a comfortable fit. Great if you loose a few pounds, it can be taken in, but it’s a whole other story if youre short 3 inches to close it ….. who needs that stress !
With all the stress that will naturally occur in the lead up to your wedding it’s important to stay connected to each other. Plan date nights regularly, even if you’re saving hard you can always stay in with a movie and popcorn, it’s not about where you go, its about staying close and united. Make time to sit and talk specifically about the wedidng too as both of you need to feel as involved as each other .
MUSIC IS YOUR KING
Load your ipod/ music player with feel good music for when youre planning; pumped songs for when youre doing your pre wedding gym sessions ; mixes of music you are considering for your service/ first dance. Music has such calming qualities that its really important to keep it pumping !
Try snack on foods that have a proven track record on helping with stress control. Foods such as oatmeal, oranges, salmon, spinich, almonds, pistachios, walnuts and avocados are fantastic for this purpose and are pretty high on the healthy food scale so win win !
